According to a recent report of the International Foundation for the Global Economic Challenge (FIDEG, for its acronym in Spanish), extreme poverty in Nicaragua in 2013 accounted for 9.5 percent of the population, representing a reduction of 7.7 percent in the past nine years when compared to 2005 data of the National Institute of Development Information (INIDE, for its acronym in Spanish).
The report “Home Survey to Measure Poverty in Nicaragua”, published by FIDEG, indicates the percentage of homes with problems of overcrowding, insufficient basic services, inadequate housing, low education, and economic dependency, has been reduced in the past 5 years.
According to the report, the unemployment rate of active population on a national level showed a decrease of 1.1 percent in the past 5 years, decreasing from 4.7 in 2009 to 3.6 in 2013.
The “Home Survey to Measure Poverty in Nicaragua” done by FIDEG has the main objective of measuring poverty in Nicaragua and keep track of it on the short term. The 2013 survey interviewed the same homes that were studied in the years 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2009, approximately 1,730 housings every year.
