Hristo Dundalov, a Bulgarian businessman, currently imports 30,000 units of Nicaraguan’s fine Padrón cigars annualy to the European markets. He claims that Nicaraguan cigars have been well accepted in the markets of Europe, due to its high quality and affordable price.
Dundalov came to the country to participate in the Third International Festival of Tobacco, an annual event held in the city of Estelí focused on showcasing the success of the national cigar industry, and was captivated by the Nicaraguan cigar for its quality, taste and texture.
“The quality of the Nicaraguan cigar is much appreciated by the most demanding customers in Europe,” said Dundalov. His main goal is to also supply the product to markets located in the Middle East. In fact, he is working toward reaching the markets of Dubai, which is one of the largest and most expensive in the world, by August of this year.
The Bulgarian businessman also expects to increase the annual purchase of cigars to 300,000 units of the most recognized brands in the country, by the end of 2014.
Dundalov stated that the high quality of the Nicaraguan Cigar is already well known around the United States and that his mission is to let the rest of the world know about it.
In the past five years, the tobacco industry has taken a significant rise in the country and Nicaraguan cigars are now listed among the best in the world. In a recent article of “Cigar Aficionado,” Nestor Andrés Plasencia, President of the Nicaraguan Tobacco Association, stated that recent statistics from 2012 show that the country accounts for more than a third of the premium cigars sold in the United States. Plasencia also stated that this is just the beginning since they are still learning about the land and the climate.
Nicaragua has the ideal climate and hills that offer the perfect land for the optimal growth of tobacco. The industry employs many young farmers in the different processes before becoming luxury cigars. This generates 35,000 direct jobs and an economy that helps support nearly 200,000 citizens of the city of Estelí. Last year, Nicaragua exported US$120 million worth of tobacco.
