This April 12th and 13th, Nicaragua will participate for the second time in NASA’s third annual International Space Apps Challenge, a worldwide hackathon where teams of students, technologists, scientists, designers, artists, educators, entrepreneurs and developers collaborate and engage with publicly available data to design innovative solutions for global challenges.
This two-day event is locally hosted in almost 100 locations in 6 continents. The Nicaragua hackathon is being led by Universidad Americana (UAM, for its acronym in Spanish), and will be held in the auditorium of the new Nicaraguan-American Cultural Center (CCNN, for its acronym in Spanish).
Last year, this event was the largest hackathon in history with over 9,000 participants from 83 cities in 44 countries. Managua participated with 11 projects and was acknowledged for one of them: a team of eight-graders created the iSpot it! App, which received an Honorable Mention for the Most Inspiring Award, a category that honors the solutions that manage to capture the hearts and attention of the panel of judges.
This year’s challenges where released on March 12th and include 5 different areas: human space flight, technology in space, robotics, asteroids, and Earth watch. Participants all around the world will develop mobile applications, software, hardware, data visualization and platform solutions that could contribute to space explorations missions and improve life on Earth.
