The Nicaraguan company, Producción de Energías Limpias Centroamericanas en Nicaragua (Pelican S.A.), was recently awarded by the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB), during the 5th edition of the Ideas Energy Innovation Contest. It is important to note that the project presented by the Nicaraguan company competed with another 282 proposals from 26 Latin American countries.
Carlos Melo, IDB’s Representative in Nicaragua, stressed that this year’s Ideas winners provide an excellent example of the quality of innovation our region is capable of developing. The IDB and Pelican S.A., are completely convinced that if the device is properly marketed, the country could save large amounts in energy consumption.
The winner’s project consists on a box that monitors temperature, the winds direction, the weather’s humidity, among other variables, and compares the consumption of the different household appliances and air conditioners so it can set a time when this devices should be turned off in order to save energy.
The 5th edition of the contest was sponsored by the Energy Sustainability Fund from Mexico's National Council on Science and Technology (CONACYT) and the Ministry of Energy (SENER), the Government of South Korea, the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
The Ideas contest is an initiative to support the development of innovative projects that promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, biofuels, and energy access in rural areas. The first round of Ideas winners was announced in 2009; this is the fifth call for proposals. Almost 2,600 applications from 28 countries in the Latin American region were received in five contests.
