Managua, Nicaragua; June 10, 2015
PRONicaragua, the investment and export promotion agency of Nicaragua, recently participated in the 2015 Seafood Expo Global, the largest seafood trade event in Europe. During the event, four Nicaraguan companies had the opportunity to promote their export offer in one of the main European markets and establish key contacts with executives and exporters worldwide. After having conducted various business meetings with potential buyers, a company was able to land a forward contract.
According to data issued by the Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN) and the General Customs Department (DGA), seafood exports amounted to US$319 million last year. The main export destinations for these products were the United States, Europe, Central America and Asia. In 2014, Nicaragua became the leading producer of farmed shrimp in Central America.
According to Royal Shrimp, a shrimp exporting company originary from Panama, the main factors that motivated the company to invest in Nicaragua were the legal security, the soil and weather conditions optimum for shrimp farming, among others. The company began operations in the city of El Viejo, Chinandega in 2012 with an initial investment of US$3.4 million and 46 employees. Currently, the accumulated investment is estimated at US$4.9 million and employments amounts to 258 during peak season.
In October, PRONicaragua will be participating in ANUGA, the main food and agriculture event in Europe, aiming to promote the quality of Nicaragua’s export products to that market.
