Nicaraguan cocoa among the best in the world

November 16, 2015

In recent days, we have heard that Nicaraguan cocoa is regarded among the best in the world. Most importantly, we were pleased with the news that our country joined the list of fine cocoa producing countries of the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO). ICCO recognized Nicaraguan cocoa as a 100 percent fine cocoa, distinction not all countries obtain.

In the 2015 International Chocolate Awards, Nicaraguan chocolate bars were awarded silver, gold and bronze medals. Mikkel Friis-Holm, a Danish chocolate maker, participated in the competition with four bars made of Ingemann’s fine Nicaraguan cocoa. Yet again, Nicaraguan cocoa was highly praised internationally.

However, what distinguishes Nicaraguan cocoa? And, what makes it so special? According to the Ministry of Development, Industry and Trade of Nicaragua (MIFIC, for its acronym in Spanish), cocoa available in Nicaragua is of the Trinitarian type, which if properly fermented, is the preferred raw material for fine and dark chocolates.

Nicaragua is one of the Central American countries with the most thriving cocoa industry. Additionally, the country has a wide availability of land with the most competitive costs, which makes it an ideal destination to establish export-oriented cocoa producing projects.

Also, one of the main factors of the growth and acknowledgements the country has received in the past months is the local and foreign direct investments that have developed the sector. Among the companies that are successfully operating in the country are Ritter Sport (Germany), Ingemann (Denmark), and Cacao de Oro de Nicaragua (United States and Nicaragua).

Nicaragua is definitely a country with so many advantages and options to develop diverse investment projects. Here is how a sector that has lagged for years has now emerged with such an incredible power, this has catapulted the country into the international sphere as one of the main fine cocoa producing countries in the world. Keep up the good work Nicaragua!
